In many cultures, men are both directly and indirectly discouraged from engaging in emotional conversations. This begins at an early age and, as a result, many men believe they must never show vulnerability or emotional pain. Depression and other mood disorders are under-diagnosed in men because of the stigma for men to seek support. Anger, rage, and substance abuse can mask underlying depression in many
men.
Choices Counseling Center offers Men’s Weekend annually in November to address the issues men face. The stress of work and relationships, father-son relationships, damaging messages about masculinity, and addictions are some of the topics we cover. Psychodrama is utilized to identify and process difficult emotions that can block healing and a true connection with others. Mutual support among the group members helps our clients feel comfortable to share in a safe therapeutic setting.
